Before you get started on the road to getting your FFL lets make sure you meet the minimum FFL requirements listed below. It costs $200 to apply for your FFL (includes first 3 years fee) and if you get denied you don’t get it back.
FFL Requirements
Ok then here they are:
- 21 years or more of age;
- Not prohibited from shipping, transporting, receiving or possessing firearms or ammunition;
- Not willfully violated the GCA (Gun Control Act) or its regulations;
- Not willfully failed to disclose material information or willfully made false statements concerning material facts in connection with his application;
- Has a place (which in many cases can be your home or even an apartment) for conducting business or collecting for C&R; and the applicant certifies that:
- The business to be conducted under the license is not prohibited by State or local law in the place where the licensed premise is located;
- Within 30 days after the application is approved the business will comply with the requirements of State and local law applicable to the conduct of the business;
- The business will not be conducted under the license until the ffl requirements of State and local law applicable to the business have been met; and,
- The applicant has sent or delivered a form to the chief law enforcement officer where the premises are located notifying the officer that the applicant intends to apply and meets the federal firearms license requirements.
- Secure gun storage or safety devices will be available at any place in which firearms are sold under the license to persons who are not licensees.
FFL Requirements -After You Get Approved
FFL holders must also keep a registry of their firearms sales in an ATF approved Bound Book, or by using ATF approved software. They also need to keep file copies of “Firearms Transaction Record” documents, for a time period of not less than 20 years after the date of sale or disposition. When retiring or otherwise giving up a license, these records are sent to the BATFE’s Out-of-Business Records Center. The ATF is allowed to inspect, as well as request a copy of these forms from the dealer during the course of any criminal investigation. Additionally, the sale of two or more handguns to a person in a five business days must be reported to ATF.

FFL Requirements Are Strict So Get Help!
If you meet the above criteria, you are a good candidate for getting your FFL License. That may seem pretty complicated to many of you and for good reason. It’s complicated by design, it’s just another way for the government to chip away at our gun rights!
Being a fellow ‘gun nut’ I frequent many of the popular weapons forums online and I sometimes see people saying, “you don’t need an FFL kit to get approved”. I’d agree with them if this were 7 years ago. Fact is these days 90% of individuals get denied. And once you get denied you’ll be blacklisted from approval in the future!
Luckily there are FFL kits available that can make the process a breeze despite the government red tape.
Brandon Maddox has an outstanding FFL kit and to my knowledge he’s never had a customer (that followed his plan) get denied.

Good Luck with your ffl and meeting all of the ffl requirements.

hey guys i live way out in the country here in prentiss co. mississippi. i would like to know if i could sell guns out of my house with an ffl? i would like to get my ffl and over the corse of the next year i would like to buy up as many guns as i can to open a nice big shop with. i dont have enough money to run out and rent a shop and fill it with guns all at the same time but i could buy 2 or 3 guns a week and save them up till i have enough to open a nice shop. thanks
You would probably have to check the regulations regarding firearms in your community. However you can sell them on the internet, but the buyer has to provide you with a FFL dealer for the gun to be shipped to for the background check.
I would recommend checking with a local law enforcement office to learn the regulations in your area first.
Sorry, but some of your info is incorrect. Just recently applied for and received my 01 FFL licensing my garage as my business premise. I don’t live in a rural area either, but a rather large metropolitan one. There is way too much misinformation out there concerning FFL’s. My personal advice is, if you want one, apply for it and let the feds and your local gov’t decide if you meet the legal requirements. Good Luck!
What kind of clearance do i need to buy fully-auto guns? I know I need a license but what kind and how do I get one? Im not looking to be a dealer, just want to own a couple.
Kevin, glad to hear you were approved to sell weapons from your garage in a non rural area! This is not always the case however so really there are no set ‘rules’ only guidelines or odds if you will.
